Meaning, in hardships we think of the Almighty, but in happy times we don’t even bother saying His name. But the one who really thinks of the Almighty in his best times is never touched by sorrows. It also means that when we seek the atman in good times, the bad times, too, seem like the doing of atman. This keeps us untouched by the wall of sorrows.

Adversity is bound to come. It does not need to be announced beforehand. It finds its way even through the slightest of cracks. Even the best of avatars like Rama and Krishna had to face crises, so why should we expect to be spared? Instead, we should be prepared to be steadfast in the times of misery.

Like the Sun remains where it is—irrespective of the rotation of the Earth— Atman, too, is omnipresent. When we turn towards it, we enjoy everything illuminated by gyana, and the moment we turn away to face the opposite side, we have to live in the darkness of maya.

Maya is like the mirage seen in a desert or the illusion of water seen at a distance on highways. It is something that which does not exist but seems real. Maya can also be understood as something that is apparent yet not obvious. When we see things happen but do not realise that there is a bigger reason working backstage, then everything seems confusing. For example, someone may be verbally harsh with us with an intention to divert us to our own progress but all we notice is that we are being abused. This is maya. Maya does not let us shift our perspective to one that keeps us happy.

On entering the lobby of the palace, the poor saint looked around and thought to himself, This man seems so engrossed in maya! He is sitting on the bejewelled throne, is being served by so many women, and sitting so up high to make everyone else feel shallow. How can he be enlightened? My poor father must have gotten fooled by him.

King Janaka asked, ‘How is Maharshi Vyasa?’

Shuka brushed his thoughts aside and said, ‘Father is well and sends his greetings.’

King nodded happily and inquired, ‘So what brings you here?’

Hesitantly, Shuka said, ‘Father has sent me as your student.’

The next minute, a sentry arrived and announced, ‘Hail the King! There is a fire outbreak emergency in the army area!’

The king replied calmly, ‘Everyone should perform their duties and leave the rest to God.’

Hearing this Shuka thought, ‘What kind of a ruler is he? He is not bothered at all!’

Poised, the king continued to speak with him, ‘So, you
